The Anticipation is Just Too Much

Ali was so excited for her Birthday. She says, "Happy 'juju' Ali", and the anticipation of the presents is just about too much! Here she got a little whiny about her desire to "eat cake" and turn "two". However, I was surprised at how she was able to refrain from opening her presents until we gave the go ahead on her birthday.

I could go broke saving money!

Today is one of my most favorite Fridays of the year, Black Friday. It has been a tradition in my family for many years for my Grandma Hettie, my Mom, sometimes some aunts, and my sisters to hit the after Thanksgiving Day sales. My Grandma is one of the best bargain shoppers around, and is the one who I need to give credit to for originally saying the title of this post. Yes, we've been know to be one of those crazy ladies at 5 am bustling around trying to hunt down the best deals. The general plan would consist of shopping for a couple of hours, going out to breakfast together and then heading for home.
After getting married, Tom and I decided to alternate which family we would spent Thanksgiving with. I've missed participating with my family but have still managed to (usually) get some shopping in each year. Although I still miss being with my sisters and mom, I'd have to say that this year was one of the craziest ever. Living near Park City we are very close to the outlets. The crazies there have chosen not to open early in the morning, but instead they open at midnight and a few stores even open at 10:30 pm on Thanksgiving Day! Well, after watching everybody chub up yesterday (I hope you know I'm kidding.) We left shortly after 10 pm to hit the sales and boy did we find them. We didn't arrive home until 7:3o am! That's right; we shopped all night long! It was my kind of shopping: little time restrictions, no kids, adequate funds all nicely budgeted for items purchased with room to wiggle for the too good to pass by deals, and a guilt free feeling because we weren't sacrificing time with the fam... everyone else was asleep. Christmas shopping season - bring it on.

Happy Thanksgiving!

THE "Thankful Day"!!! I can hardly believe how fast this month has gone. It has been fun posting (almost) everyday. (And I'm thankful for the "post options" feature so I can catch up when needed.)

I was just thinking about all the different things I've written about. I really do have so much to be thankful for, yet true gratitude is something that I definitely need to work on. It is almost like I cognitively know that I have a lot of blessing, but some of my blessings (as I wrote before) are also things that I struggle with. hmmm... I don't think that adds up to true gratitude. I was just reading a post written by my cousin, Cecilee. She wrote, "I think being grateful is a commandment because it helps us to see outside ourselves and our own problems. It helps us recognize that all around us there are things Heavenly Father has given us so that we can have joy in life. We just need to see those things." Then she posted the quote,
"Anyone who imagines that bliss is normal is going to waste a lot of time running around shouting that he's been robbed. The fact is that most putts don't drop, most beef is tough, more children grow up to be just people, most successful marriages require a high degree of mutual toleration, and most jobs are more often dull than otherwise. Life is like an old-time railroad journey. Delays, side tracks, smoke, dust, cinders, and jolts, interspersed only occasionally by beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed. The trick is to thank the Lord for letting you have the ride." (Gordon B. Hinckely, 1978)
I think I've been wasting too much time "running around shouting that (I've) been robbed." I love this quote and am so thankful for the principle of repentance and that I can improve at "thank(ing) the Lord for letting (me) have the ride".
No, life isn't perfect or easy, but it is good, and the "beautiful vistas and thrilling bursts of speed" make it fantastic. Some of these may be repeats from the month, but today I feel truly thankful for...
1. The gospel of Jesus Christ
2. A kind, sweet, and wonderful husband
3. Three beautiful, healthy children
4. Extended family that is the best
5. In-laws that provide many cousins for the kids to play with
6. A healthy body
7. Being dept free
8. New babies who will be joining our family soon
9. The Christmas season
10. The principles of hope and faith
11. Prayer
12. A loving Heavenly Father who is mindful of his children and whose hand has and will continue to guide my life.

Some pictures from the feast.

Thankful for ... Day 26

Today I'm thankful for having good health and an overall healthy body (most of the time). It's true that sometimes we don't appreciate things until they're gone. That would be the case with me today. While working this morning, I got a call to tell me that Ali was throwing up. With Thanksgiving being tomorrow, lots of company on the way, and Tom and Bentley at home. I really didn't have a choice whether or not to make the drive, and let me tell you, it was not fun. Ali was surprisingly cheerful, but still after three episodes of throwing up, I was so glad to finally make it back. She threw up one more time as we were unpacking, and then has been fine since. That is very encouraging because it seems like it is probably just a 12 hour bug. I do hope so because I think I'm coming down with it too! And on the day before Thanksgiving! But if it is a 12 hour thing, I should be feeling better by morning. I can only hope.

This is a picture of the girls just before we hit the road. As you can see, Ali wasn't too happy.

P.S.
One side note. Based on how I'm feeling, it makes me feel even worse that Ali was probably feeling this same way this morning... my poor baby. At least she's feeling better now.

Thankful for ... Day 25

Today I'm thankful for the opportunity to be with family! I truly feel that I have the best family in the world! It is just so nice to know that there are people who love you... no matter what!

These are some pictures of the girls as we were packing on Monday to visit with Grandma (bama) and Grandpa (bupa) for a couple days. It was fun to have a pre-Thanksgiving feast, be able to see Britta and Keenan, Bether, and Kenzi, and to hear some really exciting news:-)

Thankful for ... Day 24

Today I'm thankful for exercise. I love a good workout, how I feel after, and how it helps me be a more positive, happy person.

Can't leave this out... I'm also thankful for good friends, old and new. It is so refreshing to talk with someone who is a 'kindred spirit'. (Gotta love Anne of Green Gables)

Thankful for ... Day 23

Today I am thankful for my blessings and my trials. This may seem like I'm writing about opposite ends of the spectrum. No, I'm actually referring to the exact same things in many cases. I'm reminded of what my parents have often told me throughout my life, and that is, "if it were easy, then everyone would be doing it." I know I'm being vague, but somethings need to be left at that. I'm just also sooooooooo grateful that this week is Thanksgiving, because even with all the gratitude I've written about so far, I'm still in need of continual reminders. Tom and I have talked that sometimes the little things are the hardest to deal with. That is how it has been with us anyway, something big comes up and we work together to get through it, but it's the little things that sometimes throw us for a loop.

Thankful for ... Day 22

Today I'm thankful for good food. In fact, I like food so much, I consistently feel the need to eat three or more times a day! Yea, I know, ha-ha, but seriously, good food is so... well, good. We rarely eat out anymore, but today was an exception. With Thanksgiving approaching, I'm more than a little excited for the opportunity to be with family, for the opportunity to show gratitude for all the blessings I have, and of course for the food.

We stocked up at Costco today and had to splurge with one of our favorite snacks ...mmm.

Thankful for ... Day 20

Today I'm thankful for deadlines. This might sound silly or boring, but hey, I really am...
I'm working on not putting things off all the time, but it's something I'm endlessly fighting with. I can procrastinate things for weeks, but give me a deadline, and I can really crank out the work. In grad school when I would have to sign up for presentations and projects I would try to sign up for one of the first dates because knowing myself I'd just put it off until it was due. My logic was if I made it due sooner it would be finished that much faster. I can't tell you how many times I do things mentally before I actually do them. Sometimes I just want to say to myself, "Get it done!"
Still, deadlines are the one way that I find I become my most efficient self. It's especially hard being a mom and trying to get "extra" stuff done because there is ALWAYS something else that needs to be done. Enough of my rambling already.
Short and sweet. Yeah for deadlines.

Thankful for ... Day 19

Today I'm thankful for the falling price of gas. I absolutely loved being able to drive away from the pump without having a pit in the bottom of my stomach and then thinking about if each trip taken during the week is worth the cost. Today was like a breath of fresh air. I never thought that paying for gas would make me happy, but after paying over $4/gallon last summer $1.77/gallon ($1.92 with the $.15 off per gallon) is sooooo nice.

I'm also thankful for the up coming holidays. The kids watched "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" tonight, and it really got me excited for the fun month to come!

One more for the day. The weather was so nice today. I'm so thankful for an Indian summer this year. All the snow we got a while back has melted, and today felt like it could be August. It was fabulous.

Wrestling

Bentley participated in a wrestling clinic on Saturday. It was pretty difficult for me to watch him out there (fighting) wrestling on the mat, and Ali was very concerned for 'Guy' (which is what she calls him). He did have a few bumps, bruises, and a very sore ear when it was all over, but he said he had fun. At the end they had a round robin tournament. He took second place and was pretty excited about getting a medal.

Thankful for ... Day 18

I just asked Emma, "What are we thankful for today?" Her reply, "for cheese".
So there you have it.
Today, we are thankful for cheese.

Thankful for ... Day 17

Today, I am thankful for a mundane, uneventful, low-key day. After a crazy week last week, it was nice to be able to catch up on the laundry, cleaning, and all of that. It was so nice be able to relax a little and let the girls move at their own pace. So we didn't get Emma's hair done until just before leaving for dancing at 2pm. The girls had fun playing together all morning, I'm almost caught up on laundry, and we had a really nice dinner. Other days I could see myself getting 'cabin fever' (literally) and feeling restless. Not today, today it was just what I needed.

Sunday, November 16, 2008

Thankful for ... Day 16

Today, I'm thankful for Primary. I get to teach the 11 year old class, and although I do hope that those who were in my class today learned something, I think the lesson was for me.

Saturday, November 15, 2008

Thankful for ... Day 15

Today I am thankful for the Temple and for the blessings it brings. I know that if we live worthily we can be together as families forever. We often have reminders of how short life is, but it is nice to know that when this life is over, it is not the end.

Thankful for ... Day 14

I'm thinking that some days there just isn't much to blog about. However, because I've decided to post something everyday (yeah, I know I still play catch-up on occasion) but some days are just not too eventful. (Feel free to navigate away at anytime... I'll never know.)
Today I spent the morning at work; when I finished, I rushed to pack and get on the road, stopped in Spanish Fork for a sandwich, stopped in Heber to see Tom and pick up some groceries, and then made it to pick up Bentley with a few minutes to spare. When we got home, we made home made pizza and bread sticks for dinner. Then all we really had time for was unpacking, cleaning, bathes, and to bed.
It may have been an unexciting day, but I'm thankful to be with my family tonight.
"We're all together again, we're here, we're here;
we're all together again, we're here, we're here.
Here we are singing all together again,
singing all together again, we're here, we're here."
(I don't know if this is a song made-up by my family or if anyone else will know the tune as well. Oh well, it's what I've been singing all afternoon and evening:)

Thankful for ... Day 13

Today I'm thankful for sleep.
After a long day yesterday, and because I had to get up early this morning...
I was grateful for a chance to go to bed in relatively good time last night.
It is amazing what a good night's rest can do.
I know this post isn't all that exciting; still, sometimes sleep is my favorite thing.

Wednesday, November 12, 2008

Thankful for ... Day 12

Today it is more of the same. I'm just so thankful for my mom (who helps directly with speech), my dad (who spent his day off yesterday watching my girls), and my hubby (who takes on the role of primary care giver to my boy during the times that I'm away). Sometimes I feel like I should be able to do it all... on my own, but then I realize how impossible that would be. I'm so thankful for each and every person that helps to raise my children. It really does take a village.

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Thankful for ... Day 11

Today I'm thankful for a fabulous family and for an amazing job. I feel like I have the best of both worlds. I get to be home most of the time taking care of my own kids, but I get work some too where I get to interract with other amazing children and hopefully make a difference in their lives as well. I just couldn't do it without the support of others. Thanks to everyone that makes this all possible!

Monday, November 10, 2008

Thankful for ... Day 10

Today I'm thankful that we made a safe trip over a dark, rainy and snowy mountain. I really don't like to drive all that much, so each time we make it safely to a destination I feel a sense of relief.

Rub-a-dub-dub, Pooh's in the tub.

While bathing Em and Al this morning, I suddenly heard a shriek. Emma came running in with not a stitch on yelling, "Ali pooped in the tub!" Where as she is my third, this wasn't the first time we've experienced this predicament, still it had been a while. Ali was a bit upset herself, but was fine after we cleaned and disinfected her and the tub. We don't have a ton to do today, just clean and pack for our road trip this week, but each task I undertake seems to take longer today. Not too long after I got the girls cleaned up and dressed, Ali got into some powder blush which she emptied all over the inside of my make-up bag. Some things take a while to clean up. What do you do?

Thankful for... Day 9

Alternate titles:

Will my children survive childhood?

Mean mommy.

Can I take a mulligan?

Today I am thankful for the opportunity to be a parent, and although I've already expressed gratitude for each of my children individually, ... I'm going there again.

Let me put it this way:
My wonderful hubby (who I need to treat better today), really enjoys playing golf. He often has pointed out how life is like golf, so I'm going to compare Parenting to Golf.
Golf if a tough game. Sometimes you don't play very well (me today), but even when you're way over par and you're not sure it is worth going on, you take a look around and realize how beautiful it all is. The only perfect golf score would be zero, and in that case you wouldn't be playing at all. So even though things don't always go like you want, and the only child who is perfect is the unborn dream of a child created in your mind. I am so grateful for each of my children, their different personalities, all that they teach me, and for the opportunity I have of being their mom. Some games/moments might be less than pleasant, but in the whole scheme of things its all pretty sweet.

This probably doesn't make a whole lot of sense, but as you might be able to tell I've been less than stellar in my mothering today, so I'll end with one of my favorite quotes, "Tomorrow is always fresh with no mistakes in it." Can you name who said that and where it is from?

Now I'd better run, Emma is yelling, "Moooooooom, Bentley's going to do karate on me!"...

Thankful for ... Day 8

Today I'm thankful for endorphins, running, new shoes, turkey, pumpkin pie, free food, door prizes, cool cousins, Grandma and Grandpa, free babysitting, sweet deals at the outlets, more fun with cousins, and ... one great Saturday.
Today was one of those days where you can sit back at the end and say, that was a fun day.
Nora and James came up last night to have Tom take some family pictures and for the SS Turkey Trot this morning. The Fitness Center in Kamas put on an awesome Turkey Trot Fun Run which has become an annual November event for our fam. They had a 5K run, a one mile walk and a kids' one mile run. First prize in each category won a turkey, and second prize won a pumpkin pie. Between the two families we came away with a turkey and three pumpkin pies. Bentley participated in the kids run and took second! They also gave away really fun prizes: hats, jackets, sweatshirts, water bottles, goggles, passes to the fitness center, bags, etc, and they had a bunch of really good food at the end. They didn't have huge numbers come out, but I can't figure out why. It was a great time, and I just can't say enough about how lucky we are to have such an amazing facility.

After the race we went back to the cabin, had lunch, and then Nora and I took off (kid free) to tackle the outlet sales, and we weren't disappointed. When I came back, John and Heather were at the cabin. They had come up for family pictures too. Now, I just need to get our family's pictures! We had dinner, which was fabulous, and then they had to take off. After an eventful day with lots of company and commotion, it is amazing how quiet it feels with just our family. The kids went to bed without any problems which just made the day even better.
Pie anyone?

Thankful for ... Day 7

Today I am thankful for technology. Sometimes I complain that the computer, TV, whatever takes up too much of our time. Then the other night Tom reminded me all that we can do with technology, that if we tried to do without it... well, there's no way it could ever get done. Just imagine me trying to take pictures, write correspondences, print the pictures, mail them out, connect with everyone that this blog alone allows me to connect with. It just wouldn't be possible. Then there are cell phones. I love the "in" network where I can talk to my fam whenever and for however long I want, anytime! When I was first married there were times we'd go for weeks without much talk because long distance was so expensive. I also love that I have been able to connect with friends I haven't talked to for a few years via blogs, facebook, etc (although I don't know what that etc would be:). Digital cameras are another amazing thing. Gone are the days of having to pay out the nose for pictures. My amazing hubby takes the kids pictures and does a great job. Scrapbooking is simplified by going digital (although I don't think I'll ever totally give up paper), and I can't write about technology without mentioning that it is what Tommer does. Its his employment and our livelihood. He is amazing at getting things to work; in fact sometimes we joke that all he has to do is look at a computer and it starts working correctly just out of pure intimidation. I'm so grateful for his knowledge and skills. I also love that because of him I get hooked up with a nice camera, a sweet iPod, a cool new phone and it was actually him that set up this blog as well as my facebook profile. Thanks for helping me along technologically Tom, I really am so grateful. (And I'll try not too bug you so much about being on the computer... "or not" ;)

What makes you smile?

This morning at breakfast while passing out vitamins the conversation went like this:
"Bentley gets ... an orange lion, Emma gets ... a red tiger, and Ali (she only gets half a chewable vitamin) ... gets ... a hippo's bottom." This brought on loads of laughter (Ali included) at breakfast and sporadically throughout the day. Everyone that Emma talked to on the phone today got to hear about it as well. :)

Thankful for ... Day 6

Today I am thankful for a warm fire (built by my sweet hubby).

I'm also thankful that I don't have very many places to go, so I can stay inside where it is warm.

I'm thankful for my snow tires (much of my time yesterday was spent on getting them put on) so that when I do have to venture out, I can make it back up the hill when its time to come home. But right now I'm feeling especially thankful for a nice warm cup of hot cocoa ....mmm.

Thankful for ... Days 1-5

Tom recently set up a facebook profile for me on which I've been able to connect with some people that I've lost contact with. One of which I was able to connect through her blog as well. She had the great idea of posting something she's thankful for each day in November leading up to Thanksgiving. I've decided to follow suit. I think that it will be a really great thing to concentrate on what I'm thankful for being as I've been feeling pretty crummy during the last few days. I'm already five days behind, so I've decided to start with a catch-up post by listing five at once and then hopefully I'll be consistent enough to list one a day until Turkey Day.

November 1st
I'm thankful for my fantastic husband who is so supportive, loving, patient and of course "kind, sweet, and wonderful" to me.

November 2nd
I'm thankful for my baby boy! He is seven now, but I'm so grateful for him everyday. I know that he was meant to join our family when he did and has been a blessing ever since. He is so smart and energetic, and he is even a little competitive (little being an understatement, and I can't imagine where he gets it from;). I just love that little boy and can not believe how fast he is growing up.

November 3rd
I'm thankful for my Emma Lou. She is the sunshine of my day; she is so sensitive and observant to everything and everyone around her. I love the things she says, and the way she talks. For example:
Today (11/5/08) while I was changing Ali, she came into the room and the conversation went like this:
Emma: Was Ali poopie?
Me: Yes, very.
Emma: Did she have great big poopies?
Me: Yes.
Emma: (holding her arms out as wide as she could) Where they this big?
Me: (Playing along) Yes.
Emma: Where they as big as a giraffe's neck?!?
Me: (Not being able to contain my laughter and wanting to see what she'd say next) Yes.
Emma: They should have gone in the potty.

November 4th
I'm thankful for my Ali Bear. She is such a joy. I'm so thankful everyday that she is growing learning and doing so well. She had a slow start, but you could never tell that now. She is smart, social, and loves to be a part of whatever her brother and sister are doing, I ofter hear, "me too, me too". She calls Bentley, Guy, and Emma is Emmie. It makes me smile every time I hear it.

November 5th
I'm thankful for Prayers. I know that we have a Father in Heaven that hears us when we pray, and answers when we ask. I don't know why I have a hard time asking as times, because when I do ask in faith, my prayers are always answered. Today, I had a problem and kept doubting if I'd receive an answer, but once again when it came right down to it, the answer was there clear as clear. I'm also thankful for a wonderful Mother who reminds me of this and many more important things. I am truly blessed to have such wise direction and council from both earthly and heavenly sources.

What's in a Name

Before the official votes were cast, the kids of Utah were able to vote at school for who they wanted to be our next President of the United States. Bentley came home from school excited to tell us about how he got to vote. I asked him who he voted for, and he told me Barack Obama. He said that most of his class voted for John McCain, so I asked him why he voted for Obama. His reply was, "'cause he's got a cool name". What else do you need?
Now that the election is over, it should be interesting what the next four years will bring. I'm all for 'hope', but lets just hope that any 'change' brought about will be positive.
